France has called on the European Union to act against the Asian e-commerce leader Shein, after controversy arose over the sale of childlike sex dolls on its French website, two ministers announced on Thursday.

“The European Commission must intervene immediately,” stated Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on France Info.

“Investigations have been carried out by the commission, but now they must be followed by sanctions,” he emphasized.

The EU has been scrutinizing the Chinese-origin fashion giant due to concerns about illegal products.

French junior minister for digital platforms, Anne Le Henanf, along with Finance Minister Roland Lescure, sent a letter to the European Commission, pressing the EU’s executive to “utilize all available powers to clarify Shein’s activities”.

“Platforms benefiting from the European market must comply with its standards,” she commented on LinkedIn.

“The era of impunity is over.”
