This move comes after the leftist party “Unsubmissive France” submitted a petition to initiate impeachment proceedings, signed by 104 leftist deputies from various political blocs, equivalent to about one-fifth of the National Assembly’s 577 members. If approved by the office, the decision is referred to the legislative committee, composed of 73 deputies, of which only 25 are from the left. It then requires a two-thirds vote of the National Assembly, 385 deputies, within two weeks of its approval.
It is noteworthy that a similar attempt failed as the legislative committee in 2024 refused to proceed with a similar measure. Additionally, the National Assembly’s office previously rejected a petition to impeach former President François Hollande in 2016.
