Heavyweight boxing thrives on a simple yet intense promise: one punch can change everything instantly.
This division is known for its explosive endings and monumental moments. Consider Muhammad Ali’s legendary knockout of Sonny Liston (1964), George Foreman’s powerful punch against Michael Moorer (1994), and Mike Tyson’s swift defeat of Michael Spinks (1988).
Friday night at the bustling Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, fans were given a visceral reminder of why heavyweight boxing captivates audiences like no other division.

During the sixth round of IBA Pro 13: Night of Champions, Russian Murat Gassiev unleashed a perfectly timed left hook, flooring Bulgarian veteran Kubrat Pulev with a stunning knockout to become the new WBA ‘regular’ heavyweight world champion.
The arena froze momentarily before erupting in an unforgettable cheer.
Pulev, 44, who has faced world-title contenders like Wladimir Klitschko, Anthony Joshua, and Derek Chisora, knew the stakes of the match.
Initially, he fought with determination. Using a strong jab, Pulev controlled the early rounds, keeping the younger Gassiev, 32, at bay and setting the pace. However, as the fight progressed, Gassiev began targeting Pulev’s body, weakening his defenses.
A Glimpse Before the Fall
In the fifth round, Pulev showed a spark by pinning Gassiev to the ropes with a sharp right, hinting at a potential upset, but the warning signs were clear.
Then came the defining blow of the night.
A precisely timed left hook, delivered with sniper-like accuracy, hit Pulev squarely, sending him heavily to the ground. Despite his experience in over 300 fights, the Bulgarian, nicknamed ‘The Cobra’, struggled to beat the count as his legs gave way. The fight, and possibly his future aspirations, ended.
Gassiev’s victory improved his record to 33-2 (26 KOs), reigniting his presence in the world heavyweight title scene and potentially setting up future matches against Ukraine’s two-time undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk or rising British star Moses Itauma.

“This is heavyweight boxing,” Gassiev declared post-fight. “I always believed one punch could change everything. I respected Pulev’s experience, but I trusted in my power and timing. Tonight, it all came together.”
Echoes of Boxing History
Earlier, Nico Ali Walsh, grandson of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, returned to victory with a unanimous decision over Dubai’s fan-favorite Jeremiah Sserwadda in the middleweight category.

Walsh, improving to 12-2-1, demonstrated maturity and purpose throughout the six rounds, overcoming the loud support for Sserwadda. The Ugandan, now 12-5-1, showed determination, but Walsh’s ‘Ali-like’ footwork, timing, and ring intelligence were crucial.
With his mother Rasheda and father Bob Walsh, alongside global sporting figures like Manny Pacquiao, Terrence Crawford, Deontay Wilder, Amir Khan, and MMA legends Rampage Jackson and Henry Cejudo, Walsh carried both history and expectation with a composed authority, honoring the Muhammad Ali legacy embodied in his green and gold trunks.

“Every fight, I aim to make bigger and bigger statements,” said Walsh.
Anwar Shines for Indian Boxing
Indian boxing celebrated a milestone as Faizan Anwar maintained his unbeaten record, advancing to 21-0 with a disciplined points win over the formidable Khuseyn Baysangurov.
Anwar, born in Kolkata and now based in Dubai, has been shaped by the Ahmed Seddiqi-owned Round 10 Boxing Club in Al Quoz, reflected in the support he received. Fellow Round 10 fighters Farhad Baloushi and Sultan Al Numair cheered him on as Anwar showcased grit and control, qualities instilled by Seddiqi in his team.
Facing a seasoned opponent, Anwar managed the pressure effectively and emerged victorious, further solidifying his credentials on the international stage.
A Memorable Night
The undercard was filled with intrigue and action. Tajikistan’s Olympic star Bakhodur Usmonov made a late rally to edge Britain’s former IBO lightweight champion Maxi Hughes in an eliminator. Florida-based Russian Vadim Musaev stopped South Africa’s Tulani Mbenge in the third round to claim the IBO welterweight world title, and Russia’s Artem Suslenkov made a statement with a brutal heavyweight knockout of American Stanley Wright.
France’s Estelle Mossely won the women’s fight against Ellen Simwaka by unanimous decision over 8 rounds.
As the night concluded past midnight, the defining moment – Gassiev’s knockout punch – left an indelible mark, capturing the raw thrill of heavyweight boxing.
