The Israeli army has called on residents of Gaza City to move to a ‘humanitarian zone’ further south as of Saturday.
On Saturday, the Red Cross cautioned that any Israeli move to evacuate Gaza City would endanger residents, as Israel’s military intensified its siege prior to a planned offensive.
Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that since dawn, Israeli strikes have claimed 66 lives in the region already ravaged by nearly 23 months of conflict.
“A mass evacuation of Gaza City cannot be conducted safely and with dignity under the current conditions,” stated Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The poor state of shelter, healthcare, and nutrition in Gaza makes evacuation “not only impractical but incomprehensible under the present circumstances.”
