Discover Guitar Prasanna, a musician of exceptional talent. On September 20 at 5:30 PM, his guitar will echo the divine compositions of the esteemed Carnatic trinity: Tyagaraja, Dikshitar, and Shyama Shastri. Just two hours later, at 7:30 PM, the same guitar strings will transition to the captivating melodies of Indian film music legends Ilaiyaraaja, RD Burman, and AR Rahman. Two concerts, two distinct genres, and numerous emotions—all centered around Prasanna and his guitar.

Prasanna is well-acquainted with Dubai, having previously left audiences spellbound with his performances. This visit is special, marking his inaugural Carnatic concert in the city. He believes that Dubai’s unique spirit will make this dual concert unforgettable for both him and the audience. With its cultural diversity, Dubai is the ideal setting for this rare double act, where classical meets popular, and East meets West seamlessly. This Dubai concert is part of his global series, “One Man, One Guitar, Many Worlds.”

Prasanna has long bridged tradition and modern audiences, dispelling any doubts about Carnatic music’s appeal to Dubai’s diverse listeners. The city’s curious and open-minded audience makes his music universally appealing.

“I’ve performed in places like Alaska, Hawaii, Slovenia, Ghana—places where people had never experienced a Carnatic concert, let alone on a guitar,” he says. These experiences have taught him to make classical music inviting and engaging, allowing audiences from all backgrounds to appreciate its beauty and depth.

A Boy, a Neighbor, and a Guitar

Prasanna’s journey with the guitar began at four years old in Chennai, India. Without musicians in his family or formal traditions, he was inspired by a neighbor who played guitar in church. As a child, Prasanna watched in awe, captivated by the sounds. This fascination grew into a determination to one day own and play the instrument, even before knowing the genre he would pursue.

Initially exploring traditional Western styles, Prasanna pivoted to Carnatic, becoming a pioneer in a field dominated by instruments like the veena and violin. As he delved deeper, he discovered the guitar’s potential beyond his initial practice, encompassing styles like flamenco, rock, reggae, blues, and classical. Driven by a desire to master all that the guitar could express, he embraced the challenge.

“I wanted the guitar to be complete,” he says. “Not confined. Not limited. I envisioned it as a vessel for every imaginable expression.” Thus began his journey to explore new musical realms, shaping his unique identity.

The Making of a Musical Polyglot

Driven by insatiable curiosity, Prasanna embarked on a diverse musical journey. “While the piano is versatile,” he acknowledges, “the guitar has unmatched breadth. From Western chord picking to Carnatic oscillations, each style has its logic and voice. Mastering them is rare, flawlessly blending them even rarer.”

Prasanna’s dedication to music led him from Carnatic training in India to Berklee College of Music, where he immersed himself in jazz, phrasing, and improvisation, before exploring Western classical. His goal was not to check boxes or establish himself as a pioneer, but to dive deeply into music’s limitless ocean. With each genre, he found new worlds to explore, nurturing his curiosity and passion. Through this exploration, he discovered his true voice, resonating globally as pure magic.

For Prasanna, the guitar is more than wood and strings—it is a storyteller. A medium for weaving ancient ragas and modern melodies into a compelling narrative.

The Ilaiyaraaja Lesson

Ilaiyaraaja profoundly influenced Prasanna’s approach to blending diverse musical elements into a unique voice. From the maestro, he learned that influences need not compete but can coexist and intertwine, creating something entirely personal. “Every tradition and sound can find a place,” he states, “if you have the courage to let them.”

Prasanna shares this insight in workshops across North America and Europe, drawing audiences into his world, even if they are unfamiliar with Ilaiyaraaja. For him, sharing is as vital as performing, enriching the musical journey with each new experience.

Collaborations, Mentorship, and Musical Legacy

Prasanna has crossed continents and genres, collaborating with AR Rahman, Ilaiyaraaja, Victor Wooten, Vijay Iyer, and others. He composed the score for the Oscar-winning documentary Smile Pinki and founded the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music to nurture future musicians.

His greatest joy comes from mentoring young musicians. In 2024, his student Maya Neelakantan impressed America’s Got Talent judges, a triumph Prasanna proudly shares. His students carry not only skills but a philosophy: be open, explore freely, and break boundaries. He proudly names many students, including Neil Nayyar, who plays 117 instruments, as those expanding on his musical approach to create wonderful music.

Dubai: Two Concerts, One Spirit

On September 20, Dubai will witness Prasanna’s philosophy in two contrasting performances. The first, Endaromahanubhavulu, will immerse listeners in Carnatic music, freshly interpreted on the guitar. The second, Yeh Shaam Mastani, will charm the audience with nostalgic melodies reimagined. Interactive audience sing-alongs will enhance this dynamic experience with Prasanna and his fans.

Although the concerts may seem different—one devotional, the other playful—Prasanna unites them in a universal truth: music is a language for all. He believes that music connects him with audiences anywhere, anytime, showing how it speaks to everyone.

A Universal Message

In an era where labels limit artists and genres, Prasanna defies them. The guitar transcends rock, jazz, and Carnatic—it encompasses them all and more. His message is simple yet profound: keep your ears, mind, and heart open. Embrace everything the world offers. Break free from limitations and explore beyond your confines.

For those who view music as an unfathomable ocean, he advises, “Let its vastness liberate you. Let it inspire you to explore freely.” Dubai will soon hear this message as Prasanna’s six strings create magic echoing through time and tradition.
