Ian Botham Criticizes England’s Ashes Preparation

Former England all-rounder Ian Botham has expressed concern over the team’s Ashes preparations, criticizing their choice to play just one warm-up match as “bordering on arrogance.” He warns this approach may leave the team unprepared for the Test series in Australia.

Botham, who was part of England’s successful Ashes tours in 1978-79 and 1986-87, expressed worry that Brendon McCullum’s team isn’t allowing enough time to acclimate to Australian conditions.

England is set for a three-day warm-up game against the England Lions at Lilac Hill before the first Test on November 21 in Perth.

“I’m worried. We’re just going to have a casual game with the ‘A’ team,” Botham stated on the “Old Boys, New Balls” podcast.

“‘Alright mate, how are you? Good on ya’ and then we’re expected to perform? Not playing even one state match is bordering on arrogance. They claim we play too much cricket, but I think it’s not enough.”

Botham highlighted the heat, hard bouncy pitches, and home crowds as significant challenges.

“You’re not just playing against the Australian cricket team; you’re up against all of Australia – 24.5 million people,” he noted.

England coach McCullum and captain Ben Stokes have announced a 16-player squad for the five-Test series starting November 21, aiming to reclaim the Ashes for the first time since 2015, after not winning a series in Australia since 2011.

Botham also raised issues about England’s fitness management, especially concerning their pace attack.

“Bowlers don’t get fit in gyms, that’s a proven fact,” he remarked.

“Look at the injury record — (Mark) Wood, (Jofra) Archer, Stokes, Brydon Carse… they don’t play enough. Fitness comes from playing.”
