The Italian Digital Agency indicated in a statement on Wednesday that it “detected illegal sales of identity documents allegedly stolen from hotels operating in Italy.” The statement continued that tens of thousands of high-resolution scanned copies of passports, identity cards, and other identity documents used by guests during check-in procedures were stolen, according to Italy’s “Unione Sarda.” The agency pointed out that nearly 100,000 documents were stolen by a criminal known by the alias “My Dox.” It added that the criminal informed potential buyers on the dark web that he obtained the documents “through unauthorized access to computer systems between June and August 2025.” A total of 10 hotels in Italy were affected by the cyber breach, but the Italian Digital Agency did not rule out discovering more cases and did not disclose the locations of the breached hotels. The agency warned of the consequences that victims might face, noting that the data could be used to create fake identities, open bank accounts, or commit other crimes.
