Impact of Plastics on Health: A Review

The review published on Sunday in ‘The Lancet’ for Child & Adolescent Health focused on three main categories of materials: phthalates for flexibility, bisphenols for durability, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to make plastic heat and water-resistant. These materials are found in everyday products like food wrappers, cosmetics, and paper receipts, according to the lead author, Leonardo Trasande, a professor of pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

The study team pointed out that exposure to these substances is linked to nervous system disorders, reduced fertility, lower IQ, and chronic diseases such as heart disease, ADHD, obesity, and even low birth weight.

Trasande emphasized that “reducing plastic use is essential, with practical recommendations such as replacing plastic containers with glass or stainless steel and avoiding microwaving or dishwashing plastic.” However, studies have shown that glass bottles, seafood, and even salt may contain amounts of microplastic, indicating the difficulty of completely eliminating exposure.

The researchers noted that plastic is still essential in the medical field, such as in ventilators for premature infants and inhalers, but it should be avoided in daily uses wherever possible.
