Twenty-eight women participated in a study where they used rose-scented essential oil on their clothes daily for a month. Another group of 22 women used plain water, according to ‘Science Alert’. Although this increase does not necessarily mean an immediate improvement in mental abilities, the results open promising avenues for understanding the relationship between scents and brain health, which could contribute to developing preventive strategies against diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

However, no significant changes were recorded in other areas like the amygdala, which is responsible for regulating emotions, or the orbitofrontal cortex, associated with processing scents.

The study suggests that this mechanism may reflect the brain’s attempt to compensate for sensory changes, enhancing our understanding of how senses affect brain functions.
