The new study indicated that during the day, people can move and change their positions to alleviate pain, but position changes occur less frequently during sleep, leading to back pain. According to the study published by ‘Health Digest,’ a site specializing in health news and medical research, staying in bed longer than necessary has an ‘unexpected impact on health,’ as it leads to back pain, meaning that excessive sleep causes discomfort rather than providing relief. The study pointed out that prolonged sleep might be different, possibly resulting from sleeping on a poor mattress. However, even if you sleep on a new and high-quality mattress, you may feel back pain upon waking because your spine hasn’t received adequate support. According to doctors, the ideal sleep position is to surround your body and sleep with a curve, and only in this way will you feel that your back position is relatively natural and painless. It is worth noting that a study published in 2021 in the Journal of Orthopedic Surgery and Fractures stated that a medium-firm mattress might be the optimal choice to reduce the likelihood of back pain. One advantage of a medium-firm mattress is that it may also promote better sleep and reduce the need for a long sleep duration.
