Ending widespread speculation and intense debate, India’s government declared on Thursday that the Indian team will face Pakistan in the Asia Cup match in Dubai on September 14.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports confirmed India’s participation in multilateral sports events with Pakistan, while maintaining the ban on bilateral matches.
“Regarding bilateral sports events, Indian teams will not compete in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams play in India,” stated the ministry.
Calls for a match boycott emerged from Indian media and opposition, following the Pahalgam terror attack that escalated into a military conflict in May.
However, the government has approved the Indian team’s participation in the Asia Cup Group A match against Pakistan at Dubai International Stadium on September 14.
“For international events, India aligns with global sports bodies and prioritizes our athletes’ interests, considering our role as a prime international sports venue,” the ministry added.
“Indian and Pakistani teams will compete in multilateral events held in India or abroad,” they continued.
Aiming to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, India has chosen to withstand public pressure by taking this pragmatic approach.
In a previous interview with Khaleej Times, Pakistani sports broadcaster Shahid Hashmi predicted that India would allow the cricket match.
“The IOC charter mandates participation with all members. To bid for the 2036 Olympics without playing Pakistan internationally could impact India’s bid,” Hashmi explained.
India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports emphasized adherence to international sports protocols.
“To enhance India’s appeal as a host for global sports events, visa procedures for athletes, officials, and sports bodies will be streamlined,” the statement clarified.
“Multi-entry visas for sports officials will be prioritized for up to five years, ensuring smooth travel,” it continued.
Due to recent tensions, India shifted the 2025 Asia Cup to the UAE.
The tournament starts on September 9, with the final on September 28. India and Pakistan join Oman and the UAE in Group A, while Group B features Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong.
The top two teams from each group advance to the Super Four Stage of this T20 event, a precursor to next year’s T20 World Cup. Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Cricket Stadium and Dubai International Stadium will host the matches, concluding with the final on September 28.
Pakistan’s team has arrived for their tri-series against Afghanistan and UAE, at the historic Sharjah Cricket Stadium from August 29 to September 7, in preparation for the Asia Cup.
