India’s Supreme Court has mandated a probe into a wildlife rescue park operated by the Reliance Foundation, the charitable division of billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s conglomerate. This decision comes despite the lack of evidence supporting claims of illegal animal acquisitions and mistreatment.

Vantara, a prominent project of the Ambani family situated in Gujarat’s western region, is spearheaded by Anant Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s son. According to its website, Vantara has saved and cared for thousands of animals and established the largest elephant hospital. Last year, it served as a setting for pre-wedding festivities for Anant, attended by global celebrities who were encouraged to wear “jungle fever” attire during their visit to the rescue center.

On Monday evening, the Supreme Court called for an inquiry following public interest litigations highlighting complaints from non-profits and wildlife organizations. These complaints included allegations of animal mistreatment at Vantara and failures by the Central Zoo Authority. The court’s written order emphasized that while the allegations lacked proof, an independent investigation was necessary due to claims that authorities were neglecting their responsibilities.

“For the sake of justice, we find it appropriate to seek an independent factual assessment,” the court stated. In response, a Vantara spokesperson assured Reuters of their commitment to transparency and legal adherence. Vantara pledged full cooperation with the investigative panel, maintaining its mission of animal rescue, rehabilitation, and care.

The Central Zoo Authority has yet to comment on the matter. The panel, led by a former Supreme Court judge, will review the animals’ acquisition, particularly elephants, investigate allegations of creating a private collection, and ensure compliance with India’s Wild Life Protection Act.

The panel is expected to report back to the court by September 12.

Located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, Vantara hosts over 150,000 animals from more than 2,000 species. It also boasts an elephant welfare trust spanning 998 acres, claimed to be the world’s largest facility for rescued elephants.

In March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vantara and praised it for offering a safe haven for animals while supporting ecological sustainability and wildlife welfare. Anant Ambani also serves as an executive director of Reliance Industries, contributing to its technology and telecom sectors through Jio Platforms.
