Iran Opposes Zangezur Corridor Project

The assistant commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard for political affairs, Yadollah Javani, explained that “the Azerbaijani president and the Armenian prime minister were deceived by the gamble of US President Donald Trump,” adding, “Their mistake could have similar consequences for them and their countries.” Yadollah Javani continued, “It is very clear that Iran and Russia will not remain silent in the face of this unfortunate event (the project to establish the Zangezur Corridor linking Azerbaijan to its exclave Nakhchivan through Armenia, touching the Iranian border), according to him.

Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader for international affairs, confirmed that his country is concerned about the Caucasus (Zangezur Corridor), considering it “a direct threat to regional security and changes the geopolitical map of the region.” Velayati described the discussion about the possibility of “renting the Zangezur Corridor” as “political naivety,” likening it to an attempt to rent the Panama Canal, according to Iranian news agency Tasnim.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed an agreement last Friday during a meeting with US President Donald Trump. The corridor, which passes near the Iranian border, will be known as the “Trump Road for International Peace and Prosperity” (Zangezur) and operates under Armenian law. The agreement grants Washington control over the development of the strategic “Zangezur Corridor” in the South Caucasus. The project aims to “enhance regional connectivity and support economic cooperation among the concerned countries.”

In contrast, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed yesterday, Saturday, that Tehran will use all means to thwart this project and warned against “any foreign intervention near its borders that could undermine the region’s security and lasting stability.”
