Sputnik’s correspondent reported that the talks between Putin and Trump in Alaska, in a ‘narrow format,’ lasted for two hours and 45 minutes. The meeting was held at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage. Participating in the meeting from the Russian side were Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov. Representing the United States were Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Representative of the U.S. President Stephen Whitcov.
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in the United States today, Friday, to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska. The parties first held an individual meeting, followed by one with delegations. Russian Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov stated on Thursday that the main topic of the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump would be settlement issues. He added that the presidents would discuss peace and security issues, in addition to current and urgent topics on the international and regional agenda.
The Russian delegation included Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and the Chairman of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and Special Representative of the Russian President for Investment Cooperation and Economic Affairs with Foreign Countries, Kirill Dmitriev.
The Kremlin and the White House had previously announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump would meet in Alaska. Despite the numerous issues expected to be discussed, primarily the Ukrainian file, it is anticipated that there may be potential understandings, especially given the intersection of interests of the two countries in the region and the impact of the Ukrainian crisis on the situation in the Middle East, as well as the Palestinian issue, which is a focal point of tensions in the region.
Experts expect that if an understanding is reached between Putin and Trump in the near future, it will not be resolved in the first meeting on August 15.
