On Tuesday, Israel’s military instructed residents of Gaza City to evacuate in preparation for a new offensive aimed at capturing the enclave’s largest urban area. This move is part of a broader plan that has sparked global concern about the future of the territory.
The takeover of a city with a population of one million Palestinians poses challenges to ceasefire efforts in the nearly two-year conflict, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu moves forward with his strategy to target Hamas’ last strongholds.
Netanyahu stated that Israel is compelled to finish the task and defeat Hamas, as the militant group continues to refuse disarmament. Hamas insists it will only disarm once an independent Palestinian state is established.

Critics worldwide argue that Israel’s plan, which involves demilitarizing the area while assuming security control, risks worsening the humanitarian crisis for the 2.2 million residents who are already facing severe famine risks.
Efforts to mediate by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt have not succeeded in narrowing the differences between Israel and Hamas to establish a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
As of now, Israel has gained control over 75% of Gaza following the war that began with Hamas’ cross-border attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 hostages taken to Gaza, according to Israeli reports. Israeli officials report that 20 of the remaining 48 hostages in Gaza are alive.
Israel’s subsequent military actions have resulted in the deaths of over 62,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry, displaced nearly the entire population internally, and left much of the region devastated.
