King Abdullah stated that “the top priority is to reach a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and ensure the unhindered flow of aid,” according to the Jordanian news agency – Petra. He added that “while we work to resolve the conflict in Gaza, we do not want to see another conflict erupt in the West Bank,” emphasizing that annexing the West Bank or changing the historical status quo of holy sites in Jerusalem would undermine efforts to achieve peace and stability. It is noteworthy that Netanyahu proposed the idea of annexing the West Bank and the Jordan Valley in 2020, describing the move as a historic opportunity that comes only once every century. The idea of imposing sovereignty over the West Bank and the concept of “Greater Israel” dates back to after the 1967 war, during which Israel occupied Palestinian and Arab lands, a term linked to a purported geographical context about the borders of a state in the region. Currently, Israel is engaged in a wide-ranging war against the Gaza Strip that has been ongoing since October 7th, resulting in the death of more than 63,000 Palestinians and the injury of around 160,000 others, according to data from the Ministry of Health in Gaza. Meanwhile, Netanyahu rejects all local and global calls to end the war and opposes any internal voices urging him to broker a truce.
