It was also decided to cancel Gaddafi’s travel ban and allow him to leave Lebanon upon paying the bail amount, according to the Lebanese National News Agency. This comes after the Libyan Government of National Unity announced today, Thursday, that the Lebanese authorities decided to release the Libyan citizen Hannibal Muammar Gaddafi and cancel the bail imposed on him.
The government expressed in its statement its appreciation to the Lebanese President, Joseph Aoun, and the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, for their cooperation and understanding in the matter, affirming that the decision reflects the spirit of brotherhood and historical relations between the two brotherly peoples.
It confirmed that “this step was the result of continuous Libyan diplomatic efforts to address the issue in a legal and humane manner that preserves the dignity of the Libyan citizen and enhances judicial cooperation between the two countries.”
The Libyan Government of National Unity also welcomed the “intentions expressed by the Lebanese leadership to reactivate diplomatic relations and develop political, economic, and security cooperation, considering that this serves the common interest of the two peoples.”
It reiterated its “commitment to dialogue and constructive cooperation with Lebanon, stemming from its belief in the unity of Arab destiny and the importance of relations based on mutual respect and common interests.”
It is noted that Hannibal Gaddafi left Libya in 2011, eventually arriving in Syria, where he was kidnapped (according to Gaddafi’s statements), then transferred to Lebanon, and arrested in 2015.
