Libya Deports 103 Egyptian Migrants

Al-Wasat reported this Sunday morning that the Branch of the Illegal Immigration Control Department in Al-Batnan, Libya, deported 103 irregular migrants of Egyptian nationality through the land crossing of Musaid. The Libyan department confirmed that the deportation took place after completing the necessary legal procedures, and that deportation operations are ongoing daily and executed with the highest degree of discipline and readiness.

The department stated that there are instructions to adhere to the directives of Major General Salah Mahmoud Al-Khafifi, concerning intensifying efforts of all branches to curb illegal immigration and enhance security inside and outside the cities. In recent years, Libya has become a launching point for illegal migration journeys towards the other side of the Mediterranean, where migrants, mostly of African nationalities, are seeking a better life in Europe, which complains about the growing number of arrivals through Libya.

It is noteworthy that last Wednesday, the International Organization for Migration announced the death of 13 Egyptians in the sinking of an illegal migration boat off the Libyan coast. The organization reported the sinking of the boat carrying migrants off the coast, who were on their way to Greece, and the majority were Egyptians from Minya Governorate in the south of the country. Fifteen bodies, including 13 Egyptians, were retrieved, and seven bodies were transported to their families in Egypt, while eight other Egyptians were rescued.

In recent years, Libya has become a launching point for illegal migration journeys towards the other side of the Mediterranean, where migrants, mostly of African nationalities, are seeking a better life in Europe, which complains about the growing number of arrivals through Libya. These migration operations are managed by gangs exploiting the political division and security chaos in the country and are active in the northwestern regions.
