State media reported that twelve people lost their lives and four remain missing following the collapse of a bridge under construction in northwest China on Friday.

Footage aired by CCTV captured the moment the central arch section of the bridge suddenly collapsed into the Yellow River below. The failure was attributed to a snapped steel cable, as reported by Xinhua.

According to the People’s Daily, 15 workers and a project manager were present at the site during the incident. CCTV confirmed that twelve people have died and four are still unaccounted for.

The bridge, part of the Sichuan-Qinghai Railway, is noted as the world’s largest-span double-track continuous steel truss arch bridge, as per People’s Daily.

This is also China’s inaugural railway steel truss arch bridge to cross the Yellow River, the country’s second-longest river, the report highlighted.

State media images reveal the incomplete bridge missing its central section, flanked by two large scaffolding towers and several cranes.

Xinhua mentioned that hundreds of rescue workers were deployed for the search and rescue efforts.

Industrial mishaps are relatively frequent in China, often due to ambiguous regulations and lax safety practices.

Last December, 13 individuals went missing following a cave-in at a major railway construction site in Shenzhen, southern China, with no survivors reported.
