Macron Reappoints Lecornu as French Prime Minister

According to these sources, the French government announced that President Emmanuel Macron reappointed former Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister and tasked him with forming a government. The leader of the Republican Party, Bruno Retailleau, refused to join the new government. According to the sources, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, and Finance Minister Roland Lescure retained their positions. On October 6, Lecornu resigned from the position of Prime Minister of France, a role he held for only 27 days. After being reappointed on October 10, he announced plans to form a “freer” government, independent of political parties. According to Lecornu, he agreed to lead the French government again after receiving guarantees of full freedom in his actions. French media reported that Lecornu’s resignation plunged France into an unprecedented political crisis in decades. Since Macron’s re-election as president in 2022, the country has seen five prime ministers, and Lecornu’s predecessor, Prime Minister François Bayrou, resigned after parliament voted to withdraw confidence from his government due to proposed austerity measures.
