The leader of the right-wing “National Rally” parliamentary bloc, Marine Le Pen, commented on the incident via her account on the social media platform “X”, stating that what happened is “disgusting.” She wrote: “No, Nicolas Sarkozy is not a prisoner like any other, and here is the evidence.”
On his account on “X”, Sarkozy described his trial proceedings as a “judicial scandal,” considering the case to be politically motivated.
Sarkozy, who served as France’s President from 2007 to 2012, is the first former French president to be imprisoned since World War II, following Marshal Philippe Pétain, who was convicted of collaborating with the Nazi regime.
The investigation began in 2012 after a French investigative newspaper published documents suggesting that Libyan authorities transferred 50 million euros ($58 million) to Sarkozy’s presidential campaign.
