For Melanie, competing is devoid of stress and pressure; it’s “just a fun game.” Her father explained that he began her training in infancy to make it second nature. “Now, the sport feels natural to her. She approaches it with joy, not pressure.” He added that opponents often find her intimidating because of her seeming invincibility, but for Melanie, it’s all about enjoying the game.
Melanie started competing at six. Despite her limited understanding of Jiu-Jitsu then, she secured first place. “I remember it was noisy and cold, and I didn’t know many techniques,” she recalled. “I was just a little girl trying something really cool.”

Her exceptional skills have also earned her a scholarship to Dubai’s most prestigious school — GEMS School of Research and Technology, with annual fees reaching Dh206,000.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the UAE
Melanie’s journey is closely linked to the sport’s founding family. Her father recalls introducing her to Jiu-Jitsu with fun drills as a baby, preparing her body with movements taught by the Gracies. The Gracie Family is renowned in Brazil, with Helio and Carlos credited for developing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a refined version of traditional Jiu-Jitsu.

The art was introduced to the UAE over 30 years ago when Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, inspired by the confidence and discipline it instilled in him while studying in the US, invited one of the Gracie brothers to help establish training programs in the country.
Since then, Jiu-Jitsu has grown rapidly in the UAE, becoming part of school curriculums, army, and police training and is organized under the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation.
