It’s now confirmed. Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan will reunite on screen after over 46 years, as announced by the Superstar himself.

Rajinikanth, whose latest film Coolie is now available on streaming platforms, shared at the Chennai airport on September 17 that both actors, with a combined experience of acting in more than 400 films over five decades, have long desired to work together again. “There’s a plan,” he remarked in Tamil with a smile when asked about their collaboration.

“Raaj Kamal Films International and Red Giant Movies will produce it,” he confirmed, mentioning the production houses owned by Haasan and actor-politician Udhayanidhi Stalin. He added, “The right story, characters, and director are needed, but there is a plan.”

If this project materializes, it will mark their first collaboration in 46 years since Allaudinaum Arputha Vilakkum, directed by veteran Malayalam filmmaker IV Sasi. Their first appearance together was in K Balachander’s iconic Apoorva Raagangal, also Rajinikanth’s debut film.

Rajinikanth’s statement aligns with Haasan’s recent confirmation of their reunion during an awards event in Dubai. “We stayed apart by mutual agreement,” Haasan humorously explained.

“When there was a biscuit, it had to be shared. We each wanted a whole biscuit… Now, we’re content with half, so we’ve decided to reunite,” he added, receiving thunderous applause from the audience.

Last month, speculation grew that the movie featuring these Tamil cinema legends might soon begin production, with Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for hits like Rajini’s Coolie, Leo (2023), Kamal Haasan’s Vikram (2022), Kaithi (2019), and Maangaram (2017), possibly directing. However, neither actor has confirmed the director for this anticipated film. Coolie has grossed Rs 5 billion (approximately Dh208.9 million) worldwide, according to Sacnilk.

Renowned for his high-paced films with emotional depth, Kanagaraj joins an elite group of directors who have worked with both stars, including industry veterans like K Balachander, Mani Ratnam, SP Muthuraman, and KS Ravikumar.

Rajinikanth and Haasan previously co-starred in nearly 20 films, during a period when Rajinikanth was a newcomer and Haasan was already a star. Notable collaborations include Thillu Mulllu, a remake of the Bollywood classic Golmaal, Aval Appadithaan, Ninaithale Inikkum, and Geraftaar.
