Inter Miami and Lionel Messi have reached an agreement to extend the Argentine soccer legend’s contract, allowing him to continue playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) beyond the upcoming World Cup, as revealed by a reliable source.
This extension will ensure the 38-year-old remains active in the sport through the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The source stated that an official announcement is anticipated within the next two weeks, according to AFP on Wednesday night.
Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 following a less-than-satisfactory period at Paris Saint-Germain. However, he spent the majority of his illustrious career at Barcelona, where he played from 2004 to 2021 after progressing through their youth ranks.
During his time at Barcelona, Messi clinched the La Liga title 10 times and secured the European Champions League trophy four times.
In 2022, he led Argentina to World Cup victory in Qatar and has expressed his ambition to defend the title next year.
Despite his team being knocked out in the playoffs, Messi was honored as the MLS Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season.
In 2025, he made history by becoming the fastest player to score 40 goals in MLS.
