At the beginning of this month, Mexico strongly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 30% tariff on it. The Mexican Ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs announced in a joint statement that they were informed of the new tariffs during a meeting held in the U.S. capital, Washington.
Following the announcement by the U.S. President, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed that “the sovereignty of the Mexican people is non-negotiable,” stating that the tariffs “apply to all countries in the world, and a message has been sent to each of them.”
President Sheinbaum emphasized that her country and America “are striving to reach an agreement to cancel these tariffs.” Sheinbaum announced that Mexico will remain calm and defend its sovereignty in the face of the 30% tariffs announced by Trump.
Sheinbaum expressed her confidence that the dialogue table established will allow for an agreement to be reached to avoid the tariff increase, scheduled to be implemented on August 1, 2025. In her message, Sheinbaum reiterated “the resilience and courage of the Mexican people,” affirming that her government represents the dignity of the nation.
She also stressed that there are clear boundaries in bilateral relations and that national sovereignty is non-negotiable, asserting that the Mexican government is clear about what it can and cannot accept. At the beginning of this month, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of comprehensive tariffs on imports from Mexico at a rate of 30%.
