On Wednesday evening, “Hespress” reported that the UN committee approved the registration of the Moroccan caftan as an intangible world heritage during its meeting held in India. It confirmed that this international recognition comes as a culmination of the efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, who pays special attention to national culture and the preservation of authentic Moroccan heritage.
The newspaper quoted the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, stating that the Kingdom had previously submitted a comprehensive file prepared by the Ministry and the Permanent Delegation of Morocco to UNESCO in Paris. It included detailed information highlighting its aesthetic and technical development and its social functions spanning centuries.
The Ministry’s statement pointed out that the Moroccan caftan is not just a traditional costume, but a living symbolic element of Moroccan cultural identity that is passed down from generation to generation and is highly appreciated both within Morocco and abroad.
The Moroccan Ministry expressed its pride in this achievement, praising the craftsmen and traditional artisans who have preserved this Moroccan heritage, as well as the components of civil society and others who contributed to defending and promoting national cultural heritage.
The Moroccan caftan is relied upon in official and festive occasions, whether religious or family-oriented, and it is regarded as an essential part of wedding rituals and major celebrations.
