The floating solar panel project on a water reservoir near the city of Tangier in Morocco shields the water surface from sunlight while generating electricity to supply the Tangier Med Port complex. There are plans to expand the project to 22,000 panels with a production capacity of 13 megawatts, according to Western media reports. If successful, this technology could have broader impacts on Morocco. Moroccan authorities aim to replicate this experience at other dams, alongside plans to plant trees along the reservoir banks and expand desalination projects to increase production to 1.7 billion cubic meters by 2030.

The project is seen as a pioneering step to address the decline in Morocco’s water reserves, which have decreased by 75% in recent decades due to drought and rising temperatures. So far, Morocco has mainly relied on desalination to tackle the country’s water shortage, producing about 320 million cubic meters of drinking water annually.
