A new undersea tunnel is under construction for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train in India, announced Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways.

This tunnel runs beneath the creek between Mumbai and Thane, where a breakthrough has been achieved in a crucial 4.8km segment, he shared.

In total, about 320km of viaducts have been completed, and bridges over rivers are nearing completion swiftly, Vaishnaw remarked.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train will shorten travel time between these key destinations to 2 hours and 7 minutes, connecting major cities like Thane, Vapi, Surat, Baroda, and Anand.

Initially, the train will operate every half hour during peak periods, eventually increasing to every 10 minutes, the minister noted.

“This means you can travel from Mumbai to Ahmedabad without pre-booking tickets. Just arrive at the station, board a train in ten minutes, and reach your destination in two hours,” Vaishnaw elaborated.
