From a bold address by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to a film showcase at the UN headquarters and large billboards in Times Square, Israel has undertaken a significant diplomatic campaign during this year’s General Assembly, amidst widespread criticism of its ongoing conflict in Gaza.

In his address, Netanyahu harshly criticized Western nations for supporting Palestinian statehood.

Calling it a “mark of shame,” Netanyahu stated: “Do you know what message leaders recognizing the Palestinian state this week are sending? It’s very clear: murdering Jews pays off.”

Israel’s diplomatic efforts on Friday extended beyond a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York, taking unprecedented steps to communicate its messages and clarify its positions.

Here are five key moments from the day:

1. Mass walkouts

Many delegates left the hall as Netanyahu began his speech, while some in the balcony applauded.

Delegates were called to order as Netanyahu delivered his speech to an almost empty auditorium.

Simultaneously, thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters blocked traffic near Times Square in New York.

2. Loudspeakers at Gaza border

During his speech, Netanyahu addressed the 48 Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. To ensure his message was broadcast live, he ordered large loudspeakers to be set up on the Gaza border.

He delivered his message first in Hebrew and then in English, saying: “Our brave heroes, Prime Minister Netanyahu is speaking to you live from the United Nations. We have not forgotten you, not even for a moment. The people of Israel are with you. We will not falter and we will not rest until we bring all of you home.”

The right-wing Israeli leader, who spoke by phone with Trump on Thursday and will visit the White House on Monday, is facing increasing pressure from the hostages’ families and, according to polls, a war-weary Israeli public.

3. Map and quizzes

As in previous appearances, Netanyahu used a map during his address to the United Nations General Assembly to emphasize his political message.

The map highlighted countries like Iran, Iraq, and Syria in red. Netanyahu then used a black marker to count the number of enemies he claimed had been eliminated in recent months.

The Prime Minister also used other placards to present his audience with quizzes, asking questions like: “Who has murdered Americans and Europeans in cold blood?” His answers included Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran, suggesting “All of the above” was correct.

4. QR code on suit

Netanyahu wore a pin with a QR code on his suit, linking to a website showcasing images of the October 7, 2023, attack on Southern Israel.

Visitors to the site were warned that “extreme viewer discretion is advised,” but Netanyahu encouraged attendees to view it to gain a better understanding of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

5. Film screening and signs

Outside the hall in New York, massive billboards and signs were placed throughout the city, opposite the UN building and in Times Square, displaying ‘REMEMBER OCTOBER 7’ against the backdrop of the Israeli flag.

Dozens of media trucks with similar signs circulated the city, confronting pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

The Israeli Prime Minister also arranged for a film about the October 7 attack to be screened at the UN building.
