OpenAI is contending with legal challenges in India, as news organizations and book publishers allege that the company used their content without authorization to train ChatGPT. OpenAI has refuted these allegations.

“Establishing our first office and forming a local team is a crucial initial step in our dedication to making advanced AI more accessible across the nation and to develop AI for India, and with India,” stated OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

The company is facing intense competition in India from rivals like Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity, both of which have released plans that are free for many users in the market.

India hosts the largest number of student users on ChatGPT, with weekly active users having quadrupled over the past year, as per new market data released by OpenAI on Friday.
