As relentless floods and heavy rains continue to cause destruction in Pakistan, the federal cabinet has declared a climate and agricultural emergency.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad on Wednesday, reported Dawn. He announced the creation of a committee, headed by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, to address flood-related challenges.

The four chief ministers are also set to meet to “develop a policy to address the current crisis”.

The Express Tribune noted that during the meeting, it was revealed that millions of acres of farmland and crops have been devastated. The Pakistani government is prioritizing strategies to save lives and rehabilitate agricultural land.
