Prepare for New Friday Prayer Timing in UAE

With just three Fridays remaining until the new Jumuah schedule begins, worshippers who typically arrive near khutbah time still have the opportunity to adjust. Arriving earlier over the next few weeks can make the transition smoother, reduce last-minute rushes, and ensure no one misses the khutbah (sermon) when the new timing starts on January 2.

Starting next month, Friday prayers across the UAE will commence earlier at 12:45 pm, as announced by the General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat. Muslim scholars encourage worshippers to begin preparing now rather than waiting until the change takes effect.

Sheikh Ayaz Houze, Imam and Khateeb at NGS Mosque, called on the community to plan ahead. “From January 2, the Friday khutbah will start earlier. Worshippers should prepare in advance, especially in the initial weeks, to arrive calmly and spiritually prepared,” he advised.

The imam reminded worshippers that Friday prayer holds a unique significance in Islam and should take precedence over daily routines. He referenced a verse from the Holy Quran: “O you who believe, when the call for Jumuah is made, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade” (Quran 62:9).

Sheikh Ayaz suggested: “Arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes early. This allows time for voluntary worship and helps worshippers settle with focus.”

He added that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the reward for early arrival, noting that those who arrive early for Friday prayer receive greater rewards. “Arriving early also minimizes disruption for fellow worshippers,” the imam explained.

Acknowledging that routine changes can cause confusion, Sheikh Ayaz recommended taking small steps. “When routines are set, changes can lead to forgetfulness. I suggest setting reminders, informing family members, and keeping the new timing in mind throughout the week,” he said, emphasizing that the khutbah is a crucial part of Friday prayers that should be listened to attentively.

The imam also noted that some initial challenges are expected when the new timing starts, like traffic near mosques and last-minute adjustments at workplaces. However, he expressed confidence in the community. “The Muslim community in the UAE has always shown commitment and discipline. With cooperation, these challenges will be temporary,” he stated.

He also mentioned concerns that some students and school drivers might miss prayers if they are still on school buses during Friday prayer time.

Sheikh Ayaz urged worshippers to view the earlier timing positively. “Starting the prayers earlier is a blessing. It gives worshippers more of the day for family time, reflection, and personal worship,” he said, urging patience and unity as the change approaches.
