According to the report, the regulatory body confirmed that radioactive materials reached Loch Long Bay near the city of Glasgow in western Scotland. This was a result of the Royal Navy’s failure to maintain a network of 1,500 water pipes at the base near the town of Coulport. The report indicated that documents from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency showed the base experienced several leakage incidents: once in 2010, twice in 2019, and two more times in 2021. According to the data, about half of the storage equipment at that time had exceeded its operational life, while the pipes were leaking water contaminated with tritium, a radioactive substance used in nuclear warheads. The newspaper also indicated that the British Ministry of Defense and the Environmental Protection Agency had attempted for years to conceal this information under the pretext of maintaining “national security.” However, the Scottish Information Commissioner, David Hamilton, recently ordered its disclosure, which subsequently reached the media.
