The pairing of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan is one of the most iconic in Indian cinema. These legendary actors, known for their decades of memorable films, might reunite after nearly 50 years, sparking excitement in the film industry.
According to Deccan Herald, Haasan is in “advanced” negotiations with Rajinikanth for a new film, to be produced by Raaj Kamal Films International. This action-packed movie will feature both stars, with Lokesh Kanagaraj directing. Kanagaraj previously directed Rajinikanth in Coolie and Haasan in the 2022 hit Vikram.
Earlier this year, Cinema Express revealed that Kanagaraj had shared the script with both actors before Coolie’s release, and they were both enthusiastic.
Haasan, now serving in the Indian Parliament, hinted at this project years ago, expressing his interest in working with his long-time friend and contemporary.
While Coolie was a global success, earning over Rs 4,000 million (approximately Dh169 million), Haasan’s recent films, Thug Life and Indian 2, didn’t fare as well. Nevertheless, Vikram, featuring Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi, stands as one of Haasan’s major hits.
Potential Delays and Collaborations
If this project is approved, Kanagaraj’s other films, like Kaithi 2, might face delays. Kaithi was critically acclaimed and remade into the Bollywood film Bholaa.
Kanagaraj also planned a collaboration with Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, who had a cameo in Coolie. This project, originally set for 2026, could be postponed.
Kanagaraj has openly expressed his eagerness to direct these two icons. In a recent interview, he stated, “If they decide to work together, I’ll prioritize it.” He also acknowledged the challenges, including high salaries and finding the perfect story.
Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have appeared in 21 films together, with Haasan initially being more recognized. Both were introduced to cinema by the legendary director K Balachander, who also helped launch the careers of stars like Jayaprada and Prakash Raj, and gave composer AR Rahman his first break in Roja.
Their joint filmography includes classics like Apoorva Ragangal (1975), Geraftaar (1985), and Thillu Mullu (1981), a Tamil remake of the comedy Golmaal. Their careers have since followed different paths.
