Record High Drowning Victims in Spain in 2023

The union added in its statement on Monday: “Since the beginning of the year, the number of victims has reached 302 – the highest number in the first seven months of the year since data collection began in 2015.” The statement added that the highest number of deaths occurred in the Canary Islands and the Valencia region: 39 people each, Catalonia: 36 people, and Galicia: 34 people. The statement also mentioned that only Extremadura and Ceuta did not record such cases. The union noted a worrying increase in child fatalities: 23 children drowned, 20 of them in June and July. Among adults, reports indicate that the most common victims are men over the age of 45.
