The reigning US Open champion, Aryna Sabalenka, believes she is now “a better player and person” compared to when she was defeated by Leylah Fernandez four years ago. As they gear up for a rematch of their 2021 semifinal, Sabalenka is optimistic.
On Wednesday, Sabalenka overcame a tough challenge from unseeded Russian Polina Kudermetova to reach the third round in New York.
Ranked world number one, Sabalenka secured a tense first set during the Arthur Ashe night session, ultimately defeating Kudermetova 7-6 (7/4), 6-2.
This victory sets up Sabalenka for her first encounter with 31st-seeded Canadian Fernandez since their semifinal clash at Flushing Meadows four years ago.
In that previous encounter, Fernandez emerged victorious but later lost the final to Emma Raducanu. Sabalenka, however, prefers not to focus on past events.
“I’d rather not dwell on that match, as I’ve changed significantly since then,” Sabalenka stated.
“I’ve faced tough challenges and overcame them. I’ve discovered myself and improved as both a player and a person.
“Therefore, I expect this match to be entirely different. I prefer not to recall that match.
“However, I do remember a few things and enjoy rematches. So, I’m genuinely excited to face her here again,” she added.
At 27, Sabalenka is aiming to become the first woman to successfully defend the US Open title since Serena Williams in 2014.
“I must concentrate on myself. If I can deliver my game and compete for every point, I will have opportunities. I strive to give my best effort each time,” Sabalenka said.
