The request was submitted by the prosecution office in the Paris Court of Appeal, according to France’s BFM TV. In October of last year, Sarkozy was placed in La Santé Prison in Paris to serve his sentence. In September of last year, a court in Paris sentenced the former president, aged 70, to five years in prison for the Libyan financing of his 2007 election campaign.

The investigation into Sarkozy’s case began in 2012 after the French investigative newspaper Mediapart published documents suggesting that Libyan authorities transferred 50 million euros ($58 million) for Sarkozy’s 2007 presidential campaign.

In 2021, Sarkozy was sentenced to one year in prison for illegal financing of his campaign during his 2012 re-election bid, but the former French president appealed the verdict. Nicolas Sarkozy served as the President of France from 2007 to 2012.
