Music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has harshly criticized Netflix’s upcoming documentary series Sean Combs: The Reckoning, describing it as a “shameful hit piece” based on “unauthorized stolen footage,” according to a spokesperson for the artist, as reported by Variety.

The statement was made a day before the global release of the docu-series on Netflix. In the newly unveiled teaser, Combs is captured in a phone call reportedly recorded six days before his 2024 arrest. This call later became part of broader legal proceedings that resulted in his conviction for transportation for prostitution, though he was cleared of sex trafficking and racketeering charges.

In the clip included in the teaser, Combs is heard saying, “We need someone who has worked in the dirtiest of dirty businesses to help us. We are losing.”

When asked about the allegation of stolen footage, a Netflix representative referred Variety to a statement from docuseries director Alexandria Stapleton.

“We acquired the footage legally and hold the necessary rights,” Stapleton stated. “We made every effort to maintain the filmmaker’s anonymity. Sean Combs has always been keen on filming himself, a passion over the decades. We also sought comments and an interview from Sean Combs’ legal team multiple times but received no response,” Variety quoted her saying.

Combs’ spokesperson contended that the footage was taken out of context and is part of a vast archive he has been curating since the age of 19 to narrate his own story.

The representative stated Combs “has been collecting footage since he was 19 to share his story his way,” but Netflix is misrepresenting his words. The statement also repeatedly mentions Ted Sarandos, indicating Combs’ “long-standing respect” for the Netflix CEO and his “expectation of fairness from those he respects.” Additionally, the representative noted that 50 Cent is “a longstanding rival with a personal vendetta who has relentlessly defamed Mr. Combs,” finding it “astonishing that Netflix granted creative control to him.”

50 Cent’s eagerly awaited docu-series Sean Combs: The Reckoning debuts on December 2.

According to the official synopsis, the series “is a profound examination of the media mogul, music icon, and convicted felon. Born with an unending drive for fame and an eye for talent, Combs swiftly climbed the ranks of the music industry with Bad Boy Entertainment, playing a pivotal role in popularizing hip-hop and launching the careers of iconic artists like The Notorious BIG, Mary J Blige, Jodeci, and Danity Kane.”

The synopsis further states, “But throughout his journey, as recounted by former associates, childhood friends, artists, and employees, a darker side began to taint his ambitions. Through explosive, unseen materials, including exclusive interviews with those who once surrounded him, this documentary narrates the tale of a powerful, ambitious man and the lavish empire he created—and the shadowy underworld beneath it,” according to Variety.
