US Republican Senator Bernie Moreno from Ohio intends to propose a bill on Monday mandating US citizens with foreign citizenship to choose one nationality, according to Fox News.

The legislation would also stipulate that any US citizen who acquires foreign citizenship in the future must relinquish their US citizenship.

Moreno, originally from Colombia but who has renounced his Colombian citizenship, stated to Fox News, “Becoming an American citizen at 18 was one of the greatest honors of my life.”

“Taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America was a privilege. Being an American is an honor, and if you want to be one, it’s all or nothing,” he remarked. “It’s time to eliminate dual citizenship permanently,” as reported by the outlet.

Moreno’s proposal aligns with the Trump administration’s broader immigration crackdown in the US. This isn’t the first time lawmakers have attempted to repeal dual-citizenship laws.

Current laws allow Americans to maintain citizenship both domestically and internationally without choosing a sole allegiance.

Dubbed the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, Moreno’s bill aims to protect US interests by addressing “conflicts of interest and divided loyalties” associated with dual citizenship.

It would revise immigration law to compel current dual citizens to choose between the US and their other country of citizenship, as per Fox News.

The legislation would require the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to establish databases and rules to monitor and enforce the new citizenship law.

Americans with dual citizenship would have one year post-enactment to inform the secretary of state of their foreign citizenship renunciation or notify DHS of their intent to renounce US citizenship.

Failure to comply within the year results in automatic forfeiture of US citizenship.

Those who relinquish their US citizenship, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, will be “appropriately recorded in Federal systems and treated as an alien for immigration purposes,” according to the bill text.

Previous attempts to dismantle dual-citizenship laws have occurred, recently in the House, where Republican lawmakers sought to disclose foreign citizenship in candidacy statements or prevent dual citizens from serving in Congress.

Though President Donald Trump has aimed to end birthright citizenship, which remains entangled in courts, the administration hasn’t taken a stance on dual citizenship.

Moreno’s initiative might also face judicial challenges. The Supreme Court addressed dual citizenship in the 1950s and has upheld the ruling since.
