Sharjah is aiming to have Al Hisn Fort in Dibba recognized by UNESCO as a heritage site, post the fort’s development project completion. This intention was declared by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, during the ‘Al Khat Al Mubasher (Direct Line)’ program on Monday evening.
This initiative underscores Sharjah’s dedication to preserving historical, cultural, and human heritage, while boosting the profile of archaeological sites that redefine early human history.
Sheikh Dr Sultan stated: “We want Dibba Al-Hisn residents to know that we are working diligently to finalize Al Hisn Fort’s development project for its UNESCO heritage site registration. The fort holds artefacts from three significant periods: the Hellenistic, Portuguese, and Qawasim eras.

“We explored the possibility of listing the site on the UNESCO World Heritage List and are pleased it qualifies. This aligns with Sharjah’s mission to safeguard historical, cultural, and human heritage, and elevate archaeological sites that reshape early human history.”
He continued: “The Al Hisn Fort in Dibba has three interconnected floors, each an archaeological site from a distinct era. We have collected and preserved artefacts from the Hellenistic, Portuguese, and Qawasim periods within the fort. A large, aesthetically designed canopy protects visitors from the sun’s heat and the artefacts from rain.”
He concluded: “Dibba Al Hisn also features a historical square-shaped fort, undergoing restoration to become a heritage site. The area includes markets and services, with traditional houses being preserved. These enrich Dibba Al-Hisn with its heritage and archaeological wonders. We ask Dibba Al Hisn residents for patience. The meticulous work will benefit everyone, God willing, and they will witness their country’s historical essence.”
