Researchers hope that one day they will be able to weave many of these fibers together into a cohesive ‘fiber computing’ network, essentially creating clothing with smart capabilities. Smart textiles, also known as smart fabrics or electronic textiles, are materials that contain electronic components that enhance the features of wearable devices and other products, according to this study. One of the main limitations of smart textiles previously was the limited computing capabilities of each individual fiber, and the lack of any dedicated local sources or components. Due to the lack of these resources, basic tasks, such as real-time interpretation of bio-signals, become challenging, and capturing signals for later data processing is also difficult. However, in this study, scientists were able to integrate sensing, communication, computing, and storage into a single fiber thread. Scientists believe that this could pave the way for building networks of these flexible fibers, as flexible clothing pieces that can be washed, and have unique and useful applications in the future.
