Subianto canceled his visit to China yesterday, Saturday, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit due to widespread unrest in the country. Prabowo Subianto was scheduled to attend the 80th anniversary ceremony of the end of World War II in China, but he remained in the country amid a wave of protests. Indonesian authorities reported yesterday, Saturday, that three people were killed and five others were injured after protesters set fire to a regional parliament building during demonstrations, marking the first major test for President Prabowo Subianto’s government.
The unrest that spread across Indonesia since the beginning of last week was fueled by public anger following reports that members of the country’s parliament receive a monthly housing allowance of 50 million rupiahs ($3,000), which is more than 10 times the average wage in Indonesia.
