The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in an official statement on the ‘X’ platform, considered this step as a ‘positive development’ that enhances the humanitarian and economic conditions for the Syrian people, facilitates commercial and financial movement, and eases restrictions on American exports. This is the second delegation in recent times, reflecting an openness to constructive dialogue based on mutual respect.
During the delegation’s meeting with President Ahmed Sharaf, attended by the Ministers of Defense, Interior, and Social Affairs, the enhancement of bilateral relations was discussed. The meeting highlighted increasing support in Congress for the complete lifting of sanctions, including plans to abolish the ‘Caesar Act’ by the end of 2025.
The Syrian government reiterated its commitment to dialogue with international partners, based on the principles of sovereignty and mutual respect, to achieve prosperity for the Syrian people and the peoples of the region. Earlier today, the ministry announced the ‘official removal of Syria’s sanctions list from the Federal Code of Laws, with the decision to take effect tomorrow, Tuesday.’
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he made the decision to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria to give Damascus a chance to grow and move forward, according to his statement. This came in remarks reported by American media, indicating that Trump’s comment was in response to a question about the possibility of Syria joining the ‘Abraham Accords’ concerning the normalization of relations between Arab countries and Israel. Trump said, ‘I don’t know if Syria will normalize with Israel,’ adding, ‘The decision to lift sanctions on Syria came at the request of some friendly countries in the region.’
