Syria’s Strategic Relations with Russia and China

In an interview with the American channel “CBS,” Shar’a stated: “Today, Syria is building calm relations with Moscow and Beijing based on strategic interests,” adding that “Syria’s relations with Russia do not conflict with its relations with the West or the United States of America.” The Syrian News Agency (SANA) confirmed that the transitional phase official Ahmed Shar’a has traveled to the Russian capital, Moscow. Shar’a is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin today, Wednesday, as part of reorganizing bilateral relations between the two countries and discussing political and economic cooperation files. The Syrian presidency indicated that Shar’a will meet with the Syrian community in Russia. It is noted that the transitional Syrian president received a phone call from Russian President Vladimir Putin last February, during which President Putin affirmed his country’s support for Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and stability. On September 12th, Shar’a stated that “inherited strong ties connect Syria and Russia and must be preserved,” emphasizing that “Russia is an important country in the world and a member of the Security Council. We have inherited strong ties between Syria and Russia that must be preserved.”
