The study analyzed thousands of clips and conducted rigorous laboratory experiments, concluding that gestures representing meaning significantly enhance communication effectiveness. The researcher, who led the study, noticed years ago that some speakers become clearer simply by using their hands to depict abstract concepts.
Using advanced artificial intelligence tools, the researcher and his team analyzed 200,000 video clips from over 2,000 lectures related to design, technology, and entertainment, tracking and analyzing gestures frame by frame. The results showed that illustrative gestures were a strong indicator of higher audience ratings, including more than 33 million likes online.
According to the study, illustrative gestures help make abstract ideas more tangible, increasing ‘processing fluency,’ a psychological factor that leads to perceiving the message as more credible and the speaker as more skilled. The researcher is currently exploring the possibility of training people to improve their use of gestures, noting that preliminary experiments showed a training session of no more than five minutes could help speakers become clearer and more effective.
He also seeks to integrate the study of gestures with other elements of body language, such as voice, facial expressions, and body movement.
