Tragic Boat Sinking Off Libya’s Coast

On Wednesday evening, the organization reported that a boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Tobruk, eastern Libya. The migrants were on their way to Greece, and most of them were Egyptians from Minya Governorate in the south of the country. A security source from the Coast Security Administration branch affiliated with the general command in Tobruk, Libya, confirmed the recovery of 15 bodies, including 13 Egyptians. Seven of the deceased were transported to their families in Egypt, while eight other Egyptians were rescued.

In turn, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement on social media that it is coordinating with the authorities in Libya to follow up on the incident. It explained that the Egyptian consulate in Benghazi had dispatched an Egyptian delegation to Tobruk to coordinate with the relevant authorities to assess the situation of the Egyptians who were on board the boat.

The Ministry urged all Egyptian citizens to refrain from taking illegal migration routes due to the significant risks involved and the potential for exploitation by human trafficking networks. In its statement, the Ministry emphasized its commitment to continuing efforts to provide safe alternatives and legitimate opportunities for young people.
