Trump and Putin Discuss Global Diplomacy in Alaska

In an analysis published by ‘Sputnik’ English edition on Sunday, Graziani stated that Trump wants to affirm that Washington has an effective diplomatic role on a global level, while at the same time highlighting the rapprochement with and distancing from the European Union.

Graziani explained that the negotiations will not focus solely on Ukraine but will likely include ‘establishing a security structure’ that would alleviate ‘Russia’s existential fears regarding the intentions of Brussels and London,’ while at the same time acknowledging the interests of the United States in the European continent.

He added, ‘However, the two leaders are pursuing different goals. While Trump wants to ‘maintain his country’s priority in the new multipolar world,’ Putin seeks to ‘shape the new world order by involving the Global South in the discussion and decision-making process.’

Earlier on Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced that he would meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska. Despite the multiple files expected to be discussed between the two presidents, with the Ukrainian file at the forefront, it is expected that some issues might be among the potential understandings, especially given the intersecting interests of the two countries in the region.

Experts predict that many issues in the region could move towards resolution if an understanding is reached between Putin and Trump in the near term, without this issue being settled from the first meeting.
