In an analysis published by ‘Sputnik’ English edition on Sunday, Graziani stated that Trump wants to emphasize that Washington plays an effective diplomatic role on a global level, while also highlighting a divergence from the European Union. Graziani explained that the negotiations will not focus solely on Ukraine, but will likely include ‘establishing a security framework’ that would alleviate Russia’s ‘existential concerns towards the intentions of Brussels and London’, while simultaneously acknowledging the interests of the United States in the European continent.
He added, ‘However, the two leaders are pursuing different goals. While Trump wants to ‘maintain his country’s priority in the new multipolar world’, Putin seeks to ‘shape the new world order by involving the global south in the discussion and decision-making process’.
Earlier on Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced that he would meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska. Despite the multitude of files expected to be discussed between the two presidents, primarily the Ukrainian issue, it is anticipated that there will be potential agreements, especially given the intersecting interests of both countries in the region, the impact of the Ukrainian crisis on the situation in the Middle East, and the Palestinian issue, which represents a focal point of tensions in the region.
Experts predict that many issues in the region could move towards resolution if an agreement is reached between Putin and Trump in the near term, without necessarily resolving everything in the first meeting.
