According to media reports citing American sources, “President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend a controversial maritime law during the war with Iran has facilitated the transportation of oil within the United States, and he is considering maintaining this measure.” This legislation is known as the “Jones Act,” a law enacted in 1920 that increases the cost of shipping between U.S. ports, as it requires goods to be transported on ships flying the American flag, which are limited compared to the global fleet. Trump issued this on March 18 to ease oil transportation amid rising fuel prices due to the war with Iran. A site quoted one of Trump’s advisors saying the president is “pleased with what he sees,” adding that “as long as Iranian threats continue to drive fuel prices up, he prefers to keep the waiver as long as necessary.”
