UAE Calls for Ceasefire and Civilian Rule in Sudan

The UAE has urged a ceasefire and a transition to civilian rule in Sudan. Speaking from Abu Dhabi, Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic advisor to the UAE President, emphasized that Sudan’s future lies in civilian governance.

“We demand an immediate ceasefire,” he stated. “We advocate for increased humanitarian aid and firmly believe Sudan’s future isn’t with a military junta but through civilian transition.”

Gargash made these remarks at the Reuters NEXT Gulf Summit in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, noting that the UAE has faced criticism for its stance.

“When we tell the two generals that Sudan’s future isn’t under a military junta, we expect criticism,” he said. “The quartet statement, to which the UAE significantly contributed, best represents our position.”

Humanitarian Assistance

Gargash mentioned that Sudan has restricted the UAE’s humanitarian efforts akin to its role in Gaza, but affirmed readiness to deliver aid when permitted.

“In Sudan, we operate on the periphery due to restrictions,” he explained. “The conditions in Sudan prevent us from playing the role we do in Gaza. Once allowed, the UAE is prepared to fully enhance its efforts. We’ve been involved in Sudan’s economic development, assisting during its civilian governance to lift American sanctions. Our commitment to Sudan is longstanding,” he remarked.
